I Miss You Already…

I’ve dedicated this post of quotes to a very dear man, 89 years old (whom I was blessed to know all my life), and to his lovebird of over 70 years that he has left behind, in addition to his multitude of family and friends. He was a good father to his children, a great businessman, a good friend to many people, and dedicated to his wife with all his heart. While it’s a bittersweet valentine’s day, thank goodness for the memories.

People do not die for us immediately, but remain bathed in a sort of aura of life which bears no relation to true immortality but through which they continue to occupy our thoughts in the same way as when they were alive.  It is as though they were traveling abroad.  ~Marcel Proust

Where you used to be, there is a hole in the world, which I find myself constantly walking around in the daytime, and falling in at night.  I miss you like hell.  ~Edna St Vincent Millay

When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.  ~Kahlil Gibran

I wouldn’t mind dying – it’s the business of having to stay dead that scares the shit out of me.  ~R. Geis

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.  ~From the television show The Wonder Years

  1. my empathies, dear. hopefully you can take comfort in knowing his long life was well lived…

    I keep coming back to this poem by William Stafford (1914-1993) entitled “Yes” – from his book “Passwords.” (It was given to me by one of my most beloved professors, whose life was also well lived, though not nearly long enough. Incidentally, he was also personal friend of Stafford.)

    ~~~
    Yes
    It could happen any time, tornado,
    earthquake, Armageddon. It could happen.
    Or sunshine, love, salvation.
    It could, you know. That’s why we wake
    and look out–no guarantees
    in this life.
    But some bonuses, like morning,
    like right now, like noon,
    like evening.
    ~~~

  2. Wonderful poem..thanks for sharing. 🙂

  3. My father died at Christmas. I didn’t cry a lot – then – as he was 88, and his life was no longer what it had been. But I find myself caught by surprise, from time to time.

    Most recently, when a friend said the following: The caterpiller thought it was all over, and then became a butterfly.

    I totally lost it.

  4. you’re welcome for the poem 🙂
